between a failure and a fiasco

용기도 우연한 곳에서 얻는 것 같다.
어젠 수업이 없는 날이라 집에서 숙제도 할겸 쉬고 있었는데,
저녁쯤 금자가 불러서 기분전환겸 잠깐 나갔다 왔다.
선희선배도 같이 만났는데, 내일부터 출근이시라고.

나는 나만 힘든 줄 알았다. 얼마나 바보같은 생각이었는지.
나보다 더한 걸 겪은 사람이 널리고 널렸다.
나는 어쩌면 맞서는 게 두려워서 피하려고만 했는지도 모르겠다.

선배가 그랬다. 니가 외로우면 먼저 손을 내밀어 보라고. 외로운건 너뿐이 아닐 거라고.
손을 먼저 내민다. . . 나는 왜 그 생각을 못 했을까.

예전에 감명깊게 봤던 스티븐 코비의 책에서 그가 이렇게 말했던 게 기억난다.
주변을 바꾸려거든 나 자신부터 바꾸라고. 패러다임의 전환이 필요한 거다.

오늘 아침에는 보다가 남은 엘리자베스타운의 마지막 부분을 보면서 학교에 왔다.
그중 클레어가 한 대사가 깊이 마음에 남는다.

"Have the courage to fail big and stick around. Make them wonder why you’re still smiling."

드류의 말 중 몇가지 더.
